February Newsletter

February is always a busy month for the pest control industry. Not because they have a lot of ‘bugs’ to kill, but because this is when they are getting their continuing education credits. Last week, while in Colorado, Kristen and I spoke for 3 hours about lice, ticks, mosquitoes, kissing bugs, termites, fungi (decay/rot and mold), ants, ladybugs, lacewings, aphids, mealybugs, earwigs, spiders, springtails and more. Just before our talks, we had the pleasure of sitting in on Dr. Whitney Cranshaw’s presentation on stinging insects. I first met Dr. Cranshaw in 1995 at the Crossnore, NC Ornamental’s Workshop. He is a fabulous speaker and was a hard act to follow because he is so engaging, tells great stories and knows, like, everything about everything! You can view a sample of Dr. Cranshaw’s work here.
My favorite quote from Dr. Cranshaw’s presentation was from when he discussed why someone who has been stung by a wasp shouldn’t also be afraid of bees. He said, “Being afraid of a bee when you were stung by a wasp is like being afraid of a dog when you were kicked by a horse.” So funny but true!
